When making a phone call, you can use the device as a handset, use the headset, or use the speakerphone. If you're looking at the back of the device, the antenna is dead center. The best way to hold your device is with your fingers holding the edges and your palm not covering the back of the device.
In addition, when you are on the phone using a headset do not lay the phone on a metal surface or on the ground. Either will degrade the signal quality. If you have a soft surface, place the device face-down or hold the device with the back facing away from your palm. If you put the device in your pocket, face the back away from your body.
Tip! The listening sound is best when you hold the phone tight against your ear and the "mouthpiece" slightly away from your face. The microphone is sensitive enough to pick up your voice even if you hold it at this angle (about 20-30 degrees relative to your face).
. To turn the speakerphone off, press
again.
and select Settings > Advanced. From the Advanced Settings screen, in the Shortcuts group box, select the Speakerphone shortcut =
check box.
While you're on an active call, you can adjust the speaker volume by pressing the Volume + and - buttons. The buttons are located on the lower edge of your device, just below the Jump button.

| Dialing from the Call Log |
The Call Log is described in detail in Call Log Screen, but (in brief) here's how to dial using the Call Log: |
| Dialing from the Look Up Screen |
You can open a "Look Up" view into your Address Book that just lists your contacts and phone numbers. To use this screen to dial a number:

to send the incoming call straight to the forwarding option you have selected in Settings > Call Forwarding & Voice Mail.
If your caller does not have Caller ID blocked on their phone account, then the incoming call notification screen will include the caller information. In addition, if you have the caller in your Address Book, the notification screen will be further personalized with the label on the phone number and an photo caller ID icon, if you have stored this information.
There are a couple ways you can call your voice mailbox to retrieve your voice mail.
Note that while you are on a voice mail call, the screen will display the voice mail commands keys.
You can embed pauses into a phone number you dial by inserting either the comma (,) or semicolon (;) in the number sequence. Each behaves a little differently:
So, if you want to dial a number that will then ask you to select an option (e.g., "Press 1 to contact Sales; press 2 to contact Customer Support; press 3 to contact Technical Support."), and then another option (e.g., "Press 1 to leave a message; press 2 to hold for a representative."), you could type:
In the example above, you would be placed on hold to wait for a representative without having to listen through and select the options. If you used semicolons (;) instead of commas (,) in the sequence above, you would need to watch the display of your device and respond to the dialog box prompts to dial the option numbers.
To insert the comma and semicolon while you're on the phone, read Enter Additional Numbers.
Sometimes after connecting to a phone number, you'll need to enter additional numbers (such as menu item choices or your voice mailbox security code). Enter these numbers directly from the embedded dial pad in the keyboard. Note that you do not have to press the
key before typing the semicolon (;) or comma (,).

Each settings screen is described in the sections below.
Just in case you forget your device's phone number, it's shown on this screen. If, for some reason, your phone number does not appear, you can manually enter it by selecting the Enter Number button. Note that entering a number on this screen does not actually change your phone number. If you need to change your phone number, contact your wireless operator.
If you are keeping track of your calling time and need to reset the time to zero, select the Reset button. If, for some reason your phone number is not read from your SIM card, then you can enter it manually by selecting Enter Number. In the normal course of events, this should not be necessary.
You can set up your device so that you're notified of an incoming call or new voice mail by a ringtone you select.
Select one of the volume buttons to open the slider. Rotate the wheel up to increase volume; rotate the wheel down to decrease volume.
If you don't want to answer your phone for some reason and want the call to forward to another number (voice mail or somewhere else), you set this up by doing the following while in the Phone application:
then select Settings > Call Forwarding & Voice Mail. The Set Up Forwarding screen appears.
You can choose to forward to Voice Mail or Other If you select Other, a dialog box opens in which you must type the other number.
For each call situation (Busy, Unanswered, or Out-of-range), you can select a forwarding number. Again, you can choose from Voice Mail, Other, or Disable (to disable forwarding). If you select Other, then the Forwarding dialog box opens, in which you must type the other number.
To turn off forwarding altogether, select the Disable option for each call situation.
You can store up to eight speed dial numbers (#2 - #9), including shortcuts for calling cards. Shortcut #1 is permanently reserved for voice mail.
You can add new or edit existing speed dial numbers from the Settings > Speed Dial & Calling Cards screen. Read details in About Your Speed Dial List.
If you want to enable the shoulder button shortcuts for Mute and Speakerphone, select the Speakerphone shortcut =
and/or the Mute shortcut =
check boxes.
The default setting for call waiting (on or off) is determined by your contract with your wireless operator. To change the default setting, select the Change Default Setting button. Your device will query the network and determine whether call waiting is on or off, then ask if you want to switch it.
Select the Show my number for all calls check box to "turn on" Caller ID. (This check box is selected by default.) You can make an exception for just the next call you make by selecting the Hide My Number for Next Call Only button. (The button will toggle to read Show My Number for Next Call if you change your mind before you make the next call.)
If you want to hide your number from the people you call, then clear the Show my number for all calls check box. With this check box cleared, the single call exception button will read Show My Number for Next Call Only. (The button will toggle to read Hide My Number for Next Call if you change your mind before you make the next call.)
If you leave this check box deselected (no check mark), then you will be able to use the Jump shortcuts to jump to the various applications on the device by just pressing the shortcut letter while on the Jump screen. If you want to be able to use letters to dial from the Jump screen, then select this check box. If the check box is selected, in order to use the Jump shortcuts to applications, you will have to press the Jump
button, plus the shortcut key to make the jump.
