Browse Messages Screen

About the Browse Messages Screen

The Browse Messages screen is your main view into the Text Messaging application. The Browse Messages screen lists all your text messages, grouped into folders, ordered by date. (Read more about ordering your lists in Sort Text Messages.)

Title Bar - The title bar of the Text Messaging screen shows you how many messages have been stored on your SIM card and how many on your device . The information in the title bar shows you how much space you have to store text messages.

Folders - You'll see the "system" folders--Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Trash, identified by a folder-type icon: .

Individual messages are grouped in collapsible folder lists. To open (expand) a folder's list of messages, use the wheel to highlight the folder name, then press. To collapse the list, press again. Press again to expand, etc.

To the right of the folder name, if you have enabled Show Message Count/Size, the number of unread versus Message Sender - If the sender of the text message is in your Address Book, then the phone number will resolve to a contact name, which displays in the left column. If the sender is not in your Address Book, then the sender's phone number will display.

Message Lead-In and Preview - The first few words of the text message will display to the left of the sender's name/phone number. The first few lines of the message highlighted will display in the "preview pane", which appears just below the list of messages.

Open a Message - To open an individual message, highlight the message and press the wheel. To learn more about reading your message, read Read Message Screen.

Status Indicators - To the left of each item in the Browse Messages screen is an icon that indicates the status of the folder or message. To interpret these icons, read Icon Legend.

Message Count and Storage Location - If you have enabled Show Message Count/Size, the far right column will show the message count for each message and whether the message is stored on the device ( ) or on the SIM card ( ). Read more in Store Text Messages. (Note that messages can count as more than one if they exceed the per message limit. Read more in About Concatenated Text Messages.)

About System Folders

Text Messaging uses four "system" folders--Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Trash.

Icon Legend

Icons shown the to left of each folder name or text message tell you their status. Plus, all unread messages are shown in bold. Here's what the icons mean:

You have replied to this message.

You forwarded this message.

There was an error when sending this message. (It wasn't sent.) You will only see this status indicator next to messages in the Sent folder.

This message is waiting to be sent. You will only see this status indicator next to messages in the Sent folder.

This message is being sent. You will only see this status indicator next to messages in the Sent folder.

Store Text Messages

You can choose to store text messages directly on your device or on your SIM card. When you are in the Text Messaging application, the title bar shows you the capacity of each.

To manage the storage of your messages, you can move a message from the SIM card to your device, and vice versa. Here's how to move a message from one place to the other:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, make sure the folder in which your message is stored is expanded so you can highlight the message you want to move.

  2. With the message you want to move highlighted, press Menu and select either:

  3. You can move any message in this way in any of the folders on the Browse Messages screen.

Sort Text Messages

By default, the messages listed in the Browse Messages screen are organized with the newer messages at the top (ascending order). To change the order in which your messages are displayed in the Browse Messages screen, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu and select Sort to open the Sort submenu.

  2. Use the wheel to select the sort option you prefer. You can sort text messages by date or where they are stored (SIM card or device):

  3. Press Done to dismiss the menu and save your setting.

Discard Messages

To discard a single message to the Trash:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message you want to discard. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. From either the Read or Browse Messages screen, press Menu then Cancel .

  3. The message is moved to the Trash folder.

Retrieve a Message from the Trash

As long as a message is in the Trash, you can retrieve it to another folder:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the Trash folder.

  2. Press the wheel to expand the contents of the folder (if they are not already expanded).

  3. Scroll to highlight the message you want to retrieve.

  4. Press Menu then select Retrieve Message. The message now is restored to the folder from which you discarded it.

Empty Trash

To discard all messages in the Trash folder permanently:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Empty Trash.

  2. The contents of your Trash folder are emptied after you confirm that you want to discard them permanently.

Read Message Screen

Read a Text Message

To open an individual text message for reading, do the following:

  1. Make sure the folder in which you've stored the message is shown in expanded view. (Press the folder name to expand/collapse the messages contained in the folder.)

  2. Use the wheel to highlight the message; a message preview shows in the lower half of the screen. To have the message display in full-screen view, then press the wheel. Your message contents display on the screen.

  3. To dismiss the message and return to the Browse Messages screen, press Done .

Use Embedded Links

If a text message contains a phone number, email or Web address, you will be able to call that number, send a message to that address, add the information to your Address Book, or go to that Web page by using the context menu:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, highlight then select the message to open it for reading.

  2. If a text message contains either a phone number, email address, or Web address (or all), the information will appear as "live" (underlined) links in the message body.

  3. To act on any of these links, highlight the link then press and hold the wheel to open the context menu. You can also press Menu then select Links [ ] to open the context menu. To take the default action on any link, simply press the wheel.

  4. With a phone number highlighted, you can call the number, send a text or MMS message to the number, add the number to your Address Book, or copy the number.

  5. With an email address selected, you can send a message to that address via email or MMS, add the number to your Address Book, or copy the address.

  6. With a Web site URL selected, you can go to the URL, send the URL (via email, text, or MMS message), add the URL to your bookmarks, or copy the URL.

Add Text Message Sender to Address Book

Add the sender of a text message as a contact:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message whose sender you want to add as a contact. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. From either the Read or Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Add to Address Book [ @].

  3. The Add to Address Book dialog box opens with the new contact's phone number added.

  4. At this point you can:

Call Back Message Sender

Quickly call back the sender of a text message:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message from the person you wish to call back. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. You can call the sender back in either of two ways:

    Either method takes you to the Phone application; verify the number and press Send Call.

Add vCard Text Message to Your Address Book

If you receive a message containing a vCard, you can import that information into your Address Book:

  1. Open a message that contains a vCard.

  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the message where the vCard is displayed and select Import.

  3. The contact information contained in the vCard is imported to your Address Book. Note that if you already have a contact by this name, the information will be duplicated.

Receive Ringtones

Many Web sites offer ringtones that you can download to a wireless device for a fee. If you purchase a ringtone, it is delivered to your wireless device using the Short Message Service. Your device can store up to 10 such ringtones. If you receive a text message with a ringtone attached, it will automatically be added to your ringtone library in the "Imported" category, which you can then select as a notification method.

If you already have 10 custom ringtones in your device's ringtone library, then before any additional ringtones you purchase can be saved to your device, you will be asked to remove one of your 10 saved ringtones.

Compose Text Message Screen

About Concatenated Text Messages

If you wish to compose a message that exceeds the maximum number of characters per message (approximately 160), you can do so simply by continuing to type past the maximum number. You'll know when you've crossed the limit by looking at the Compose screen title bar, or the bottom of the screen.

When you send a multi-part message, the long message is broken into "parts", which are then concatenated (linked together) when the message is received. You can compose up to the equivalent of 20 messages. Note that your wireless operator may charge you for the equivalent number of messages, if your billing is set up that way.

Compose a Text Message

Save a Text Message as a Draft

If you are composing a text message and want to save it so you can resume composing or sending at a later time, save your message in the Drafts folder. Note! You cannot save a message that has a vCard attached as a draft.

  1. With the message you're composing on the screen, simply press Done . (You can also press Menu and select Safe as Draft.)

  2. The message is saved to the Drafts folder.

  3. To reopen a draft message, from the Browse Messages screen scroll to highlight the draft message you want to open, then press the wheel. The message reopens in the Compose screen for editing.

Note: Be sure to Save as Draft after each edit, or you'll lose your edits.

Reply to a Text Message

To reply to a text message, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message to which you want to reply. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. From either the Read or Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Reply [ R].

  3. The Reply screen opens with the To field filled in.

  4. Complete and send your message, as described in Compose a Text Message.

Forward a Text Message

To forward a text message to another individual, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message you want to forward. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. From either the Read or Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Forward [ J].

  3. The Forward screen opens ready for you to address. The message is appended to the end of the new message.

  4. Complete and send your message, as described in Compose a Text Message.

Resend a Text Message

You can only resend messages that are in the Sent folder. You can resend any of the messages in the Sent folder, whether or not they were successfully sent:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the Sent message you want to resend. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. Press Menu then select Resend [ M]. Your message opens in a Compose screen, which means you can edit any of the fields, if you wish.

  3. When ready to resend, select Send [ M].

Send a vCard

To send one of your contact's information as a vCard attachment, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select New Message [ N]. The Compose screen appears.

  2. Complete the To field. Note that if you type a message and then attach a vCard, your text will be deleted. If you discard the vCard, your text will reappear in the message field. In other words, you cannot have both a typed message and a vCard, just one or the other.

  3. Press Menu then select Attach vCard. A list of all your Address Book contacts opens.

  4. Scroll to highlight the contact whose information you want to send, then press the wheel to select it. You are returned to your Compose screen.

    Note: If the vCard you've selected contains a lot of information, then your text message may be concatenated when sent. Check the lower left of the Compose screen to see how many "messages" your text message will be when sent.

  5. When ready to send, select Send [ M].

Text Messaging Settings Screens

Show Message Count/Size

By default, for each message, the Browse Messages screen displays the sender's phone number, first few words of the message, and the date sent. If you also want to see how many unread/total messages you have, and where the messages are being stored (SIM card or device), then do the following while in the Text Messaging application:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the General group box, select the Show message count/size in folder view check box to show the extra information on the Browse Messages screen. Clear the check box to hide the extra information from view.

  3. Press Done to save your setting and return to the Browse Messages screen.

Save Outgoing Messages in Sent Folder

If you want a copy of each text message you send to be saved to your Sent folder, check this check box. If you change your mind at some point, select the check box to clear the check.

Include Original Message in Your Replies

If you want to include the sender's original message text in your reply to that message, then do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the General group box, select the Include original message in reply check box. Clear the check box to turn off the feature.

  3. Press Done to save your setting and return to the Browse Messages screen.

Always Request a Reply

You can automatically request a reply when you send a text message by selecting the check box on this screen. Note: You can always override this default setting on individual messages by selecting/clearing the Request Reply check box on the Compose screen.

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the General group box, select the Always request a reply check box to request a reply by default; clear the check box to not request a reply by default.

  3. Press Done to save your setting and return to the Browse Messages screen.

Always Request a Delivery Report

A "delivery report" is a message sent to your device after a text message you've sent has been successfully delivered to the recipient. You can automatically request a delivery report when you send a text message by selecting the check box on this screen. Note: You can always override this default setting on individual messages by selecting/clearing the Request Delivery Report check box on the Compose screen.

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the General group box, select the Always request a delivery report check box to request a reply by default; clear the check box to not request a reply by default.

  3. Press Done to save your setting and return to the Browse Messages screen.

Set Text Messaging Ringtones

You can select the way your device lets you know (or "notifies" you) when a new text message has arrived. If you have a ringtone selected, you will also receive a balloon notification in the title bar when a new message arrives. To select a notification method, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the second group box, you can set your New message alert. Select the pop-up menu to open it and see all the possible ringtone categories from which you can select.

  3. If you do not want to be notified of a new incoming message, select None.

  4. If you do want to be notified of a new message, then select from one of the possible ringtone categories. To view the songs for a particular category, press the wheel with the category highlighted and the submenu opens. To dismiss any of the submenus, press Done . To preview a song, keep the song highlighted for a few moments (make sure you haven't silenced your device).

    Note that the category/song currently in effect is highlighted.

  5. To select one of the songs for your ringtone, press the wheel when the song is highlighted.

  6. Press Done to save your settings.

Edit Prewritten Messages

To edit any of the 12 prewritten messages, do the following from the Settings screen:

  1. Scroll to the Edit Prewritten Messages group box and select the message you want to edit. A dialog box will appear with the message selected.

  2. Type the message you want to store.

  3. Press Done .

To restore the default messages, press Menu and select Restore Defaults.

Advanced Text Messaging Settings

To reach the Text Messaging advanced settings, from the Browse Messages screen, press Menu , then select Settings. Press Menu again and select Advanced Settings. Two settings are available in the Advanced group box:
