Browse Messages Screen

About the Browse Messages Screen

The Browse Messages screen is your main view into the Multimedia Messaging application. The Browse Messages screen lists all your multimedia messages, grouped into folders, ordered by date by default. (Read more about ordering your lists in Sort Multimedia Messages.)

Title Bar - The title bar of the Multimedia Messaging screen shows you how full your Multimedia Messaging mailbox is and the total capacity.

Folders - You'll see the "system" folders--Inbox, Sent, and Trash.

To the right of the folder name, if you have enabled Show Message Count/Size, the number of unread versus total number of messages is shown in parentheses.

Individual messages are grouped in collapsible folder lists. To open (expand) a folder's list of messages, use the wheel to highlight the folder name, then press. To collapse the list, press again. Press again to expand, etc.

Message Sender - If the sender of the multimedia message is in your Address Book, then the phone number will resolve to a contact name, which displays in the left column. If the sender is not in your Address Book, then the sender's phone number will display.

Message Lead-In - The first few words of the multimedia message will display to the left of the sender's name/phone number.

Message Size - If you have enabled Show Message Count/Size, you will see the message size to the right of the message lead-in.

Open a Message - To open an individual message, highlight the message and press the wheel. To learn more about reading your message, read Read a Multimedia Message.

Message Type and Status Indicators - To the left of each item in the Browse Messages screen are icons that indicate the message type and the status of the folder or message. To interpret these icons, read Icon Legend.

Icon Legend

Icons shown the to left of each folder name or multimedia message tell you the message content type or status. Plus, all unread messages are shown in bold. Here's what the icons mean:

Message contains pictures.

Message contains sound.

Message contains both sound and pictures.

You have replied to this message.

There was an error when sending this message. (It wasn't sent.) You will only see this status indicator next to messages in the Sent folder.

This message is waiting to be sent. You will only see this status indicator next to messages in the Sent folder.

This message is being sent. You will only see this status indicator next to messages in the Sent folder.

Keyboard Shortcuts

While in the Multimedia Messaging application, you can use keyboard shortcuts to select options from the menus.

Sort Multimedia Messages

By default, the messages listed in the Browse Messages screen are organized with the newer messages at the top (ascending order). To change the order in which your messages are displayed in the Browse Messages screen, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu and select Sort to open the Sort submenu.

  2. Use the wheel to select the sort option you prefer. You can only sort multimedia messages by date:

  3. Press Done to dismiss the menu and save your setting.

Discard Messages

To keep your Multimedia Messaging mailbox within its limit, be sure to discard old messages periodically, and then Empty the Trash. To discard a message:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message you want to discard. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. From either the Read or Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Cancel .

  3. The message is moved to the Trash folder.

Retrieve Messages from the Trash

As long as a message is in the Trash, you can retrieve it to another folder:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the Trash folder.

  2. Press the wheel to expand the contents of the folder (if they are not already expanded).

  3. Scroll to highlight the message you want to retrieve.

  4. Press Menu then select Retrieve Message. The message now is restored to the folder from which you discarded it.

Empty the Trash

To discard all messages in the Trash folder permanently:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Empty Trash.

  2. The contents of your Trash folder are emptied after you confirm that you want to discard them permanently.

Read Multimedia Message Screen

Read a Multimedia Message

To open an individual multimedia message for reading, do the following:

  1. On the Browse Messages screen, make sure the Inbox folder is shown in expanded view. (Select the folder name to expand/collapse the messages contained in the folder.)

  2. Use the wheel to highlight the message, then press the wheel. Your message contents display in the Read screen.

  3. Select Play [ D] to start the slide show. If you have set your messages to play automatically (as described in Set Slide Show Behavior), then the slide show will play automatically once you open the message to read. To read about other play options, read Multimedia Messaging Settings.

  4. To dismiss the message and return to the Browse Messages screen, press Done .

Save Multimedia Messages Sound Attachments as Ringtones

You can save any of the sounds included in your message as ringtones. To do this, follow these instructions:

  1. From the Read screen, reveal the message attachments by selecting the Show attachments pane then pressing the wheel so the arrow points downward and the text changes to Hide attachments.

  2. Rotate the wheel to highlight the sound attachment you want to save as a ringtone, then press and hold the wheel to open the context menu.

  3. Select Save as Ringtone.

  4. The ringtone will appear in your "Imported" category.

Add Message Senders to the Address Book

If you receive a message from an individual you would like to include as a contact in your Address Book, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message whose sender you want to add as a contact. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. From either the Read or Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Add to Address Book [ @].

  3. The Add to Address Book dialog box opens with the new contact's phone number added.

  4. At this point you can:

Call Back Sender of a Message

To use the Phone application to call the sender of a multimedia message, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message from the person you wish to call back. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. Press Menu then select Call Back [ P].

  3. Verify the number and select Send Call .

Compose Multimedia Message Screen

Compose a Multimedia Message

Each multimedia message you compose can contain up to three multimedia slides, each containing a text, sound (voice note or song), and picture attachment. Each message is limited in size, determined by your wireless operator. Note that as you compose a new message, the size of the message will be updated dynamically in the title bar and at the bottom of the Compose screen.

  1. Address your message:

  2. Create your slides. You can create up to three slides in any one multimedia message. Notice that each slide is numbered on the left in a "slide" icon.

    Each slide can contain text, a voice note or song , and a picture attachment.

  3. Use the sec(s) pop-up menu to select how long you want the slide to play. Note that if you have attached a voice note that plays longer than the menu setting, the voice note will be cut off when played.

  4. To add a new slide, select the "Add Slide" icon . You can add up to a total of three slides by repeating Step 2.

  5. To preview your message, press Menu then select Preview [ D]. You can make changes to any of the message attachments (text, sound, picture):

  6. To send your message, from the Compose screen press Menu then select Send [ M].

  7. To save your message as a draft, press Done .

  8. To discard your message, from the Compose screen press Cancel . You'll be asked to confirm.

Record a Voice Note

To send a voice note that you record, do the following:

  1. From the Multimedia Messaging Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Record Voice Note [ ]. The Stand By dialog box appears.

  2. Press Start Recording [ ]. Record your message by speaking into the microphone (located by the wheel).

  3. Press Done when you are finished to save it directly to a new multimedia message. Press Stop Recording [ ] to bring up the Recorded dialog box. From the Recorded dialog box you can Re-Record [ ], Preview, or attach the voice note to a new multimedia message by selecting Done .

  4. Once you select Done, the voice note is attached as a "sound" to a multimedia message, ready for you to address. You can also add a picture and additional slides to the message before sending.

Save a Multimedia Message as a Draft

If you are composing a multimedia message and want to save it so you can resume composing or sending at a later time, save your message in the Drafts folder:

  1. With the message you're composing on the screen, simply press Done . (You can also press Menu and select Safe as Draft.)

  2. The message is saved to the Drafts folder.

  3. To reopen a draft message, from the Browse Messages screen scroll to highlight the draft message you want to open, then press the wheel. The message reopens in the Compose screen for editing.

Note: Be sure to Save as Draft after each edit, or you'll lose your edits.

Reply to a Multimedia Message

To reply to a multimedia message, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message to which you want to reply. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. From either the Read or Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Reply > via Multimedia [ R] or via Text.

  3. The Reply screen opens with the To field filled in.

  4. Complete and send your message, as described in Compose a Multimedia Message; or, if you you've chosen to reply via Text Messaging, Compose a Text Message.

Forward a Multimedia Message

To forward a multimedia message to another individual, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the message you want to forward. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. From either the Read or Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Forward [ J].

  3. The Forward screen opens ready for you to address. The message is appended to the end of the new message.

  4. Complete and send your message, as described in Compose a Multimedia Message.

Resend a Multimedia Message

You can only resend messages that are in the Sent folder. You can resend any of the messages in the Sent folder, whether or not they were successfully sent:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, scroll to highlight the Sent message you want to resend. Open the message if you wish by pressing the wheel.

  2. Press Menu then select Resend. Your message opens in a Compose screen, which means you can edit any of the fields, if you wish.

  3. When ready to resend, select Send [ M].

Multimedia Messaging Settings

Set Slide Show Behavior

You can set the following preferences for messages that you receive.

To set these preferences, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the General group box, select the Auto-start the slide show check box if that is your preference. Clear the check box to require a manual start.

  3. In the General group box, select the Loop the slide show check box if that is your preference. Clear the check box to play the slide show through only once.

  4. Press Done to save your setting and return to the Browse Messages screen.

Automatically Download New Messages

You may have the option to set a preference to download new messages automatically. The presence of this setting is determined by your wireless operator. If you do see this option on your settings screen, it will appear in its own group box.

Select the check box if you want messages automatically downloaded to your device. Note that if you are roaming, messages will not be downloaded automatically to your device unless you also select the Auto-download even while roaming check box.

Note: If this option exists on your Multimedia Messaging Settings screen, and you do not select it, then, when a new message arrives, you will receive a dialog box asking if you want to download the message. The dialog box will include the message size, so if you are monitoring your mail box limit (2 MB), you can make an informed decision.

Save Outgoing Messages

If you want a copy of each multimedia message you send to be saved to your Sent folder, follow these instructions:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the General group box, select the Save outgoing messages in Sent folder check box if that is your preference. If you change your mind at some point, select the check box to clear the check.

  3. Press Done to save your setting and return to the Browse Messages screen.

Show Message Count/Size

By default, for each message, the Browse Messages screen displays the sender's phone number, first few words of the message subject line, and the date sent. If you also want to see how many unread/total messages you have, and how much space each message takes up, then do the following while in the Multimedia Messaging application:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings > General. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the General group box, select the Show message count/size in folder view check box to show the extra information on the Browse Messages screen. Clear the check box to hide the extra information from view.

  3. Press Done to save your setting and return to the Browse Messages screen.

Set Multimedia Messaging Ringtones

You can select the way your device lets you know (or "notifies" you) when a new multimedia message has arrived. If you have a ringtone selected, you will also receive a balloon notification in the title bar when a new message arrives. To select a notification method, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings > General. The General Settings screen appears.

  2. In the second group box, you can set your New message alert. Select the pop-up menu to open it and see all the possible ringtone categories from which you can select.

  3. If you do not want to be notified of a new incoming message, select None.

  4. If you do want to be notified of a new message, then select from one of the possible ringtone categories. To view the songs for a particular category, press the wheel with the category highlighted and the submenu opens. To dismiss any of the submenus, press Done . To preview a song, keep the song highlighted for a few moments (make sure you haven't silenced your device).

    Note that the category and song currently in effect are highlighted.

  5. To select one of the songs for your ringtone, press the wheel when the song is highlighted.

  6. Press Done to save your settings.

Advanced Multimedia Messaging Settings

You can set how many days your outgoing messages will attempt to be delivered, assuming an initial delivery problem occurs. Leaving the setting at the default number of days should be fine, but if you wish to change the number, do the following:

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings > General. The Settings screen appears.

  2. In the Advanced group box, rotate to select the Sent messages are valid for pop-up menu. Press the wheel to open the pop-up, then scroll to the number of days you want your messages to attempt to be delivered. Press the wheel to select the number.

  3. Press Done to save your setting and return to the Browse Messages screen.

Accounts Settings Screen

You may be advised by your wireless operator to change your MMS Account (this may happen, for example, if you are traveling to another country). You manage your MMS accounts on the Accounts Settings screen.

Change Your Active MMS Account

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings > Accounts. The Accounts Settings screen appears. All accounts are listed in the Accounts group box. Notice that some accounts cannot be discarded or modified. They are notated with a padlock icon ( ).

  2. In the Set Active MMS Account group box, select the pop-up menu. This menu displays all available MMS accounts.

  3. Select the correct MMS Account, then press Done to save the change.

View/Edit Account Details

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings > Accounts. The Accounts Settings screen appears.

  2. In the Accounts group box, use the wheel to select an account, then press the wheel. The Account Details screen opens.

  3. If the account is not default (locked) you will be able to edit the fields; if it is a default account, you can only view the details.

Add an MMS Account

  1. From the Browse Messages screen, press Menu then select Settings > Accounts. The Accounts Settings screen appears.

  2. Press Menu then select New Account [ N]. the New MMS Account screen appears.

  3. Complete all the fields, then select Create . Your new account is saved.
