Note: This application is not available in all product configurations. Product configurations vary by wireless operator.
While using Yahoo! Messenger, you can use the following keyboard shortcuts for menu items:
If you have at least one Yahoo! ID, you can sign in to Yahoo! Messenger.
, then press the wheel. The pop-up appears. Scroll to highlight the Yahoo! ID you want to use to sign in, then press the wheel.
To remove a Yahoo! ID from the pop-up menu, read Remove Existing Yahoo! ID.
There are several reasons why you might not be able to sign in to Yahoo! Messenger:
To sign out from Yahoo! Messenger at any time, press Menu
and select Sign Out.
You can switch Yahoo! IDs at any time:
then select Sign Out. The Sign In screen appears.
You can remove one or more names from the Yahoo! ID pop-up menu on the Sign In screen. Note that if you do this, you will not be deleting your Yahoo! Messenger account, you will just be removing the Yahoo! ID from the list. You can always add the name back in later by typing it in Yahoo! ID/Password fields and then signing in.
Note that you must be signed out to remove a Yahoo! ID.
. Now, the name(s) you've removed will not appear on the Yahoo! ID pop-up menu.
Tip: To put a removed Yahoo! ID back on the Yahoo! IDs pop-up menu, simply sign in using that Yahoo! ID by typing the Yahoo! ID and Password manually on the Sign In screen.
The Friend List screen is your main view into the Yahoo! Messenger service. The screen shows a grouped listing of all your friends.
Title Bar At the very top of the screen in the title bar you'll see your Yahoo! ID and current status ("available" in the illustration above).
Groups Next, all the groups you have created are listed, with the friends in collapsible lists.

Friends and Status With the group contents expanded, to the far right of each friend's Yahoo! ID you'll see their open conversation number (if you have a conversation open with them), and to the left is an availability/status icon, if applicable. Here's what the icons mean:
Offline Friends Friends who are "offline" are shown in italic font. You can choose to display or not display offline friends. (Press Menu
then select Offline Friends > Show/Hide.) Also, if you are out of radio range, the friends in your Friend List will be displayed in italic font instead of plain text. When you come back into range, they will be appear in plain text again
Open Conversations Running vertically down the right side of the screen, all the conversations with unread messages are symbolized by little balloons, with the conversation number in the balloon. Note also that if you have an unread message, you will see a tiny Yahoo! Messenger icon in the title bar, directly under the date.
To set a status message you must first be signed in to Yahoo! Messenger (read more in Signing In for the First Time). Once you've signed in:
then select Friend List

then select Change My Status [
W] to open the submenu.
The currently-selected option is marked with a bullet and is dimmed.
. If you have any open conversations when you set a status message, your message will appear in your friend's conversation screen.
The message will appear in any open conversation windows with other friends, as well as in parentheses after your Yahoo! ID on other users' Friend Lists.
Select the Show Busy Icon check box if you want the busy icon to appear next to your name on other users' Friend Lists. If you don't select the Show Busy Icon check box, then the custom status message will simply appear in parentheses behind your Yahoo! ID.
, select Change My Status [
W], then pick a different option.
You use "groups" to organize your friends, much like you use folders to organize your email and text messages. To add a new group to your Friend List, do the following while in the Yahoo! Messenger application:

and select Add Group [
N]. The New Group dialog box opens.
. The group is added to your list. Note that if you do not add a friend to this group, the next time you sign out, the group will be removed.
You can rename any of your groups:

and select Rename [
E]. The Rename Group dialog box opens.
. The group is displayed with its new name on your Friend List.
You can discard any of the groups you've created (along with the Friends in that group).

then select Cancel
. A confirmation dialog opens.
To cancel the action and keep the group and friends on your list, press Back
.
You can add friends, change their group assignment, remove and move them. Your device will support 300 friends, the same as the Yahoo! Messenger desktop client. To add a friend to your list, follow the steps below. Note friends must "accept" your request.

then select Add Friend. The Add a Friend dialog box opens.
. A message will be sent to the friend asking they accept your request. Until they answer, their Yahoo! ID is added to your list. If someone does not want you to add them as a friend, you will be notified and their Yahoo! ID will be removed from your Friend List.
Tip: If you're having a conversation with a person not on your Friend List, you can add them to your list quickly by pressing Menu
then selecting Add Friend. Their Yahoo! ID is pre-populated in the Add a Friend dialog box.
Once you've added a friend, you can change what group the friend is in and how you're notified when the friend signs in/out or sends you a message. To edit a friend, do the following while in the Yahoo! Messenger application:

then select Edit [
E]. The Edit Friend screen displays.

You can move friends to a different group without opening the Edit Friend screen. Note that if you move a friends within a group they will return to alphabetical sort the next time you sign out and in again.

O] to enter "move mode". The friend you are moving is shown focused in a dotted line.
To remove a friend from your list, do the following while in the Yahoo! Messenger application:

then select Discard
. A confirmation dialog opens.

If you want to block messages from a particular friend, do the following:

then select Ignore. The Cannot Ignore a Friend dialog box opens.
If you want to block messages from someone not on your Friend List, follow the instructions in Manage Ignored Users List.
Conversations are one-on-one chat sessions you have with your online friends. With Yahoo! Messenger, you can have up to 10 online conversations going at the same time. To send a message to one of your friends, follow the instructions below.
until it appears.
Tip: If you have a long Friend List, to find a friend's Yahoo! ID quickly, start typing the first few characters of the friend's Yahoo! ID and the auto-find feature will highlight the closest matching Yahoo! ID.
then select Send IM [
M]. The Send Instant Message dialog box opens.
In the Send to text box, type the Yahoo! ID of the friend you want to message. You can also open the pop-up menu and select a Yahoo! ID (all your friends are listed there). Select Start Conversation
or press Return. A conversation screen with this friend opens with your initial message showing.
Note: If you send a message and it appears in the top pane in italic, this indicates that you've been temporarily disconnected from the Yahoo! Messenger service. You will be reconnected automatically as soon as possible, at which time your message will appear in regular font, not italic.
then select End Conversation [

Tip: If you want to Sign Out and end all your conversations at once, simply return to the Friend List screen, press Menu
+ Cancel

If you have any unread messages, the Yahoo! Messenger splash screen and the Friend List will display balloon indicators
, one for each active conversation in which you have an unread message.
In addition, each open conversation is numbered and usually displays to the right of the friend name in any of the lists
. If you're in the Yahoo! Messenger application or on the Yahoo! Messenger Jump screen and you press Menu
+ <conversation number>, you will be taken to that conversation screen.
The easiest way to switch between conversations is to press Menu
+ <conversation number>. You can also press Menu
and select Conversations [
D] to open a submenu of all your active conversations. From this list, select the conversation you want to make active.
If a friend sends you an email address, URL, or phone number in a conversation, you can take an action on that item from the menu.
If the conversation also contains an embedded email address or phone number, the appropriate menu options will appear.
Simply select the appropriate menu option from the open conversation window to:
Note that your conversation will stay open while you use another application to take one of these actions.
While you're in a conversation you can add smileys (emoticons) to your message:
then select Smileys [
Y] to open the Smiley submenu.
Note: On devices that do not support the graphical smileys, the ASCII version of the smiley will be displayed.
To open the Settings screen and set preferences, do the following while in the Yahoo! Messenger application:
From either the Yahoo! Messenger Sign In screen or the Friend List screen, press Menu
then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.
You can choose to display graphical smileys in your Yahoo! Messenger conversations, or not. Scroll to highlight the Show graphical smileys check box, then press the wheel to select it if you want to display smileys. Press the wheel again to clear the check box if you want to suppress the graphical smileys. If you do not select this option, then if you receive smileys in a message, the ASCII version will display.
If you want users who have you on their Friend List to see when you're "idle", then scroll to highlight the Allow friends to see when I'm idle check box, then press the wheel to select it. If you leave this check box unchecked, then the idle icon will not appear next to your Yahoo! ID on other's Friend Lists when you've been idle for 10 minutes or more.
In order for Friend Alert Rings to work, you must enable these alerts from the Settings screen.
then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.
To enable friend alerts, scroll to highlight the Play friend alerts check box, then press the wheel to select it. To disable friend alerts, select the check box again to clear it.
To pick an alert, first select a ringtone "category" from the pop-up menu on the left, then select a corresponding "sound" from the submenus.
You can override these settings for individual friends on the Edit friend screens. Read more in Edit a Friend.
If you do not want to receive messages from an individual, you can "ignore" messages from them by doing the following:
