The Contact List Screen

About the Contact List Screen

The Contact List screen is your main view into the MSN Messenger service. The screen shows a grouped listing of all your contacts.

Title Bar   At the very top of the screen in the title bar you'll see your sign-in name and current status.

Sort Contact List   There are two main ways you can sort your contacts: Online/Offline, or by Groups. To sort, press Menu and select Sort By > Online or Groups.

Contact List Display   You can choose to display your contacts by Display Name or Email Address. The default display is by email address. To change the display, press Menu and select View Contacts By > Display Name or Email Address.

Groups   If you've sorted your list by Groups, all your groups are listed, with the contacts in collapsible lists. Note! You cannot create a group on your device; to create a new group, go to the MSN Messenger desktop client.

Contacts and Status   With the group contents expanded, to the far right of each contact's name you'll see their open conversation number (if you have a conversation open with them), and to the left is an availability/status icon, if applicable. Here's what the icons mean:

Contact is online and available.

Contact is busy.

Contact is away.

Contact is offline.

You have blocked this contact.

You have a new message from this contact.

Contact is signed in from a wireless device/contact is idle.

Offline Contacts   Contacts who are "offline" display in italic font. If you have sorted by "Offline", then they all appear in their own Offline folder; if you've sorted by "Group", then they appear in their assigned group folder. If you are out of radio range, all the contacts in your Contact List will be displayed in italic font instead of plain text. When you come back into range, the online contacts will be appear in plain text again.

Open Conversations   Running vertically down the right side of the screen, all the conversations with unread messages are symbolized by little balloons, with the conversation number in the balloon. If you have an unread message, you'll also see a tiny MSN Messenger icon in the title bar, directly under the date.
