Note: This application is not available in all product configurations. Product configurations vary by wireless operator.
While using MSN Messenger, you can use the following keyboard shortcuts for menu items:
If you have at least one sign-in name, you can sign in to MSN Messenger.
, then press the wheel. The pop-up appears. Scroll to highlight the name you want to use, then press the wheel.
To remove a sign-in name from the pop-up menu, read Remove Existing Sign-In Names.
There are several reasons why you might not be able to sign in to MSN Messenger:
To sign out from MSN Messenger at any time, press Menu
and select Sign Out.
You can switch sign-in names at any time:
then select Sign Out. The Sign In screen appears.
You can remove one or more names from the Sign-In Name pop-up menu on the Sign In screen. Note that if you do this, you will not be deleting your MSN Messenger account, you will just be removing the sign-in name from the list. You can always add the name back in later by typing it in Sign-In Name/Password fields.
Note that you must be signed out to remove a sign-in name.
. Now, the name(s) you've removed will not appear on the Sign-In Name pop-up menu.
Tip: To put a removed name back on the Sign-In Name pop-up menu, simply sign in using that name by typing the Sign-In Name and Password.
The Contact List screen is your main view into the MSN Messenger service. The screen shows a grouped listing of all your contacts.
Title Bar At the very top of the screen in the title bar you'll see your sign-in name and current status.
Sort Contact List There are two main ways you can sort your contacts: Online/Offline, or by Groups. To sort, press Menu
and select Sort By > Online or Groups.
Contact List Display You can choose to display your contacts by Display Name or Email Address. The default display is by email address. To change the display, press Menu
and select View Contacts By > Display Name or Email Address.
Groups If you've sorted your list by Groups, all your groups are listed, with the contacts in collapsible lists. Note! You cannot create a group on your device; to create a new group, go to the MSN Messenger desktop client.

Contacts and Status With the group contents expanded, to the far right of each contact's name you'll see their open conversation number (if you have a conversation open with them), and to the left is an availability/status icon, if applicable. Here's what the icons mean:
Offline Contacts Contacts who are "offline" display in italic font. If you have sorted by "Offline", then they all appear in their own Offline folder; if you've sorted by "Group", then they appear in their assigned group folder. If you are out of radio range, all the contacts in your Contact List will be displayed in italic font instead of plain text. When you come back into range, the online contacts will be appear in plain text again.
Open Conversations Running vertically down the right side of the screen, all the conversations with unread messages are symbolized by little balloons, with the conversation number in the balloon. If you have an unread message, you'll also see a tiny MSN Messenger icon in the title bar, directly under the date.
To set a status message you must first be signed in to MSN Messenger (read more in Signing In for the First Time). Once you've signed in:
then select Contact List

W] to open the submenu.
The currently-selected option is marked with a bullet and is dimmed.

. If you have any open conversations when you set a status message, your message will appear in your contact's conversation screen.

W], then select a different option.
Your device will support 300 contacts, the same as the MSN Messenger desktop client. From your device you can add contacts, change their group assignment, remove and move them. To add a contact to your list, follow the steps below. Note that a prospective contact must "accept" your request before they will appear "online" in your list.

then select Add Contact. The Add a Contact dialog box opens.
. The new contact appears "offline" until they accept your request. If they decline your request, then they will continue to appear offline.
Tip: If you're having a conversation with a person not on your Contact List, you can add them to your list quickly by pressing Menu
then selecting Add Contact. Their name is pre-populated in the Add a Contact dialog box.
If someone not on your Contact List sends you an instant message, you will receive a dialog box that gives you the option to either Block or Allow and Add the person as a contact:
. The contact is added to your Contact List.
Once you've added a contact, you can change what group the contact is in and how you're notified when the contact signs in or sends you a message. To make these changes to a contact, do the following while in the MSN Messenger application:

then select Edit Contact [
E]. The Edit contact screen displays.

You can move contacts to a different group without opening the Edit contact screen. Note that you cannot move a contact within a group. The contacts are always listed alphabetically.

O] to enter "move mode". The contact you are moving is shown focused in a dotted line.
To remove a contact from your list, do the following while in the MSN Messenger application:

then select Discard
. A confirmation dialog opens. You can also choose to block this user by selecting the Block this user check box.

If you want to block messages from a particular contact, do the following:
until it appears.
then select Block.
. Their name will also appear in the Block List, as described in Manage Block List.
, then select Unblock. (You can also follow the instructions in Manage Block List.)
Conversations are one-on-one chat sessions you have with your online contacts. With MSN Messenger, you can have up to five online conversations going at the same time. To send a message to one of your contacts, follow the instructions below.

Tip: If you have a long Contact List, to find a contact's sign-in name quickly, start typing the first few characters of the contact's sign-in name and the auto-find feature will highlight the closest matching name.
Note: If you send a message and it appears in the top pane in italic, this indicates that you've been temporarily disconnected from the MSN Messenger service. You will be reconnected automatically as soon as possible, at which time your message will appear in regular font, not italic.
then select End Conversation [

Tip: If you want to Sign Out and end all your conversations at once, simply return to the Contact List screen, press Menu
+ Cancel
.
Conversation with Offline Contacts
You cannot start a conversation with an offline contact, but if you try to, you'll be given the opportunity to open an email compose
While in a conversation, the title bar will show the screen name of the person you're conversing with and their status. In the example below, the user is conversing with someone signed on from their desktop and happens to be away:

You can send an active conversation via email message or text message from the conversation screen:
and select Send Conversation > via Email Message [
M] or via Text Message.
M to send it.
If you have selected the Show timestamps setting (read more in Show Timestamps), then you will see the time appear in the conversation window, just above the message to which it refers:
If you have any unread messages, the MSN Messenger splash screen and the Contact List will display balloon indicators
, one for each active conversation in which you have an unread message.
In addition, each open conversation is numbered and displays to the right of the contact name in any of the lists
. If you're in the MSN Messenger application or on the MSN Messenger Jump screen and you press Menu
+ <conversation number>, you will be taken to that conversation.
The easiest way to switch between conversations is to press Menu
+ <conversation number>. You can also press Menu
and select Conversations [
D] to open a submenu of all your active conversations. From this list, select the conversation you want to make active.
If a contact sends you a phone number, URL, or email address in a conversation, you can take an action on that item from the conversation itself. Simply rotate the wheel to highlight the link, then press and hold the wheel to open a context menu with all the link options. Press the wheel once to take the default action.
You can also take the link action from the menu.
If the conversation also contains an embedded email address or phone number, the menu options will include appropriate links. Simply select the appropriate menu option to:
Note that your conversation will stay open while you use another application to take one of these actions.
While you're in a conversation you can add emoticons (smileys) to your message:
then select Emoticons [
Y] to open the Emoticons submenu.
Note: On devices that do not support the graphical emoticons, the ASCII version of the emoticon will be displayed.
To open the Settings screen and set preferences, do the following while in the MSN Messenger application:
From either the MSN Messenger Sign In screen or the Contact List screen, press Menu
then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.
You can choose to display graphical emoticons in your MSN Messenger conversations, or not. Scroll to highlight the Show graphical emoticons check box, then press the wheel to select it if you want to display emoticons. Press the wheel again to clear the check box if you want to suppress the graphical emoticons. If you do not select this option, then if you receive emoticons in a message, the ASCII version will display.
To display timestamps within conversations, select the Show timestamps check box. Read about timestamp behavior in Timestamps.
If you want your idle state to turn into "away" status automatically, select the Show as "Away" when idle 5 mins check box. To change the idle time-out value, open the idle time pop-up menu and select a value from 1-99. If you leave this check box unselected, then you will appear as "online & available" to others regardless of how long you have been idle.
Select this check box if you want your device to sign in to the MSN server automatically after you power down then power up. If you are signed in to MSN Messenger on another device or a desktop client when the "automatic signin" happens, will be signed out of the other session.
By default, your sign-in email address is your Display Name. You can change the name by editing this field. Your Display Name is what appears on others' Contact Lists when they choose to view their contacts by Display Name (vs. email address).
In order for Contact Alerts to work, you must enable these alerts from the Settings screen.
then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.
To turn on contact alerts, scroll to highlight the Play contact alerts check box, then press the wheel to select it. To turn off contact alerts, select the check box again to clear it.
To pick an alert, first select a ringtone "category" from the pop-up menu on the left, then select a corresponding "sound" from the submenus.
You can override these settings for individual contacts on the Edit contact screens. Read more in Edit a Contact.
If you do not want to receive messages from an individual, you can block messages from them on the Contact List screen. (Read more in Block a Contact.) You can unblock a contact from the Settings screen by doing the following:
then select Settings. The Settings screen appears.
